The primary function of an audio compressor is to attenuate loud sounds beyond a specified threshold while amplifying quieter elements, effectively narrowing the dynamic range of an audio signal. This processing enables increased overall levels within a mix, allowing individual recordings to blend more cohesively into the overall soundscape.

In its latest iteration, the compressor introduces an experimental sidechain option that permits hosting multiple instances of the plugin. This feature allows one instance to route audio through one of three busses, which can subsequently be employed as input for other compressors. This capability facilitates a 'Trance'-style pumping effect, enhancing the rhythmic drive of the mix. While tested successfully in AUM, Cubasis, and GarageBand, compatibility may vary across different DAWs. For instance, one could apply the compressor to a bass drum track and route audio to Bus 1, enabling several other tracks to draw input from Bus 1. This setup would allow the bass drum's volume to dynamically attenuate the associated tracks. It's important to note that default compressor functionality is disabled when utilized as a sidechain source in this manner.
